I write these brief lines to request your collaboration in disseminating information about the new online course in terminology taught in English by the research group IULATERM, under the direction of Professor M. Teresa Cabré.As you know, our group has organised seven editions of the International Summer School in Terminology, and since 2002 we are giving a modular programme completely online, that includes an introductory course, a diploma, several workshops, that culminates in obtaining a Master of the University Pompeu Fabra. All this training has been taught until now in Spanish, since it is a part of the academic offer provided by the Red Iberoamericana de Terminología (RITERM).

This year we have inaugurated a new line taught in English and given completely online, with two editions of the introductory course. Now, introductory course would be open again with its third edition and second level course would be added to the offer:
· Introduction to Terminology Course (3rd edition), from January 6 to March 2, 2010.
· Postgraduate Diploma in Terminology and Professional Needs (Intermediate Course, 1st edition), from March 3 to June 15, 2010.
We are aware of the well-known work done in terminology by our group, but it is specially known in relation to Catalan and Spanish. We ask for your collaboration in spreading this training program among not only your students but also among graduates of your university or other universities of your country. We would highly appreciate if you would provide us
contacts of professors and/or departments of Asian universities or departments of the east of
Europe, as we are familiar with their training needs in terminology for translation, documentation, technical writing and
normalization, and the problems related to mobility, that this academic online program in English can solve.

La collaborazione ideale fra il traduttore e il revisore editoriale

INFORMAZIONI GENERALI
Seminario di formazione per traduttori per approfondire gli ambiti di intervento di ciascun profilo professionale (con particolare attenzione a quelli del redattore e del revisore) durante la lavorazione di una traduzione editoriale e le possibili collaborazioni fra il traduttore, il revisore esterno e il redattore interno. Il seminario sarà completato da un breve corso pratico di redazione per traduttori che si terrà in autunno; è possibile in ogni caso seguire solo uno dei due eventi formativi. 

OBIETTIVI DEL SEMINARIO
Quando pensiamo alla parola “empatia” collegata a una traduzione letteraria, ci viene istintivamente in mente quella ideale fra il traduttore e l’autore. Ma questa capacità di profonda intesa con un altro essere pensante è un requisito fondamentale anche del revisore, che mette le proprie competenze e la propria sensibilità al servizio del testo e del traduttore. A volte – quando non si riesce a instaurare, per vari motivi, una fluida comunicazione con la redazione dopo la consegna di una traduzione – a libro pubblicato il traduttore può avere l’impressione che siano stati effettuati interventi arbitrari e peggiorativi sul proprio lavoro. Il traduttore ha però a disposizione diversi strumenti per monitorare la propria traduzione durante le varie fasi di lavorazione redazionale e per rendere il rapporto a volte problematico con il revisore (e la redazione) una collaborazione proficua.  Argomenti trattati: figura professionale e formazione del redattore e del revisore; fasi editoriali della traduzione; revisione e redazione di una traduzione: uniformazione, controllo con l’originale, revisione stilistica e lessicale; la quantità, la qualità e la legittimità degli interventi di revisione; la revisione di una traduzione a più mani; strumenti del traduttore per monitorare la lavorazione editoriale della sua traduzione. Nel corso del seminario verrà illustrato il Decalogo per il processo di lavorazione delle traduzioni, elaborato a cura della Sezione Traduttori del Sindacato Nazionale Scrittori.  Scopo del seminario sarà analizzare il lavoro del traduttore e del redattore dopo la consegna della traduzione, perché riescano a garantire la pubblicazione della migliore traduzione possibile. Nel corso del seminario verranno messe a confronto le esperienze di traduttori, redattori, revisori. Ampio spazio verrà dato al dibattito e alle esperienze dei partecipanti.

Nel ventennale della SSLMIT, il Laboratorio di Terminologia e Traduzione Assistita organizza una serie di workshop di aggiornamento sugli ultimi sviluppi nei campi della terminologia, della traduzione assistita ed automatica e della localizzazione.  I workshop prevedono esercitazioni hands-on sull'impiego di nuovi strumenti software e sono rivolti in primo luogo ai laureati SSLMIT e secondariamente a professionisti, aziende e centri di traduzione.  Il primo appuntamento avrà come tema SDL Trados 2009 e la nuova versione di BootCaT, uno strumento sviluppato presso la SSLMIT che permette di generare rapidamente corpora paragonabili in varie lingue dal Web.  Il workshop si terrà presso il nuovo Laboratorio di Terminologia, Via Giacomo della Torre n. 5 (campus universitario), con il seguente orario:  - venerdì 25 giugno ore 15-18.30 - sabato 26 giugno ore 9-12.30  Il numero di posti è limitato a 30.

Summer Course in English Phonetics 9 - 20 August 2010  http://www.ucl.ac.uk/psychlangsci/scep  Study Phonetics in London! Come and spend two weeks in London this summer, studying English Phonetics at University College London (UCL). No increase in fees for 2010!  There are two strands to our Summer Course:   ¡öEFL If, like 90% of our participants, you're a teacher or student of EFL, you could brush up your knowledge of the theoretical side of phonetics and bring yourself up-to-date on new developments; or you may want the opportunity to do some ear-training and listening practice under the guidance of specialist tutors; or you may just want to improve your own English pronunciation. You can do it on the UCL Summer Course in English Phonetics.   ¡öIPA  If you have good prior knowledge of English phonetics ¡ª whether you're an EFL teacher/student or a native speaker of English ¡ª you maybe able to enrol in the IPA Certificate strand to prepare you for taking the International Phonetic Association's Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in the Phonetics of English. The IPA examination will be held on Monday 23 August 2010 at UCL. There is an entrance test for admission to this strand (see below).    At UCL we are enthusiastic about the study of pronunciation and how to teach it. We are the world's leading university department for English Phonetics¡ªour tradition was established by Daniel Jones, and continued by A.C.Gimson, and J.C.Wells, all scholars with a world-wide reputation. We are also a leading centre for teaching and learning innovations in phonetics, and host the biennial international Phonetics Teaching and Learning Conference.   The Course covers all the main aspects of English phonetics:   ¡öphonemic system (vowels and consonants) ¡ösegmental analysis (allophonic processes) ¡öword stress ¡öweakening and coarticulation processes ¡ösentence stress (accent, tonal stress) ¡öintonation and meaning    These topics will be investigated both in lectures and in practical classes. We deal with both speaking and listening. You will get plenty of practice in pronunciation performance (sounds in isolation and, more importantly, in connected speech) and in auditory discrimination (ear-training). Practical groups will be kept small (not more than about ten people), and will be streamed according to students' level of ability. We expect to have separate groups at least for    ¡öEFL strand, university academics and postgraduates ¡öEFL strand, teachers of English as a foreign language ¡öEFL strand, undergraduate students of English ¡öIPA examination strand.    In the EFL strand (the main strand followed by most participants) we pay particular attention to the difficulties of English pronunciation for learners of EFL. We focus especially on the phonetic characteristics of connected speech, analysing the ways in which the pronunciation of words in discourse typically differs from their pronunciation in isolation. We look at stress and intonation particularly from the point of view of pragmatics and discourse function. The theory, ear-training and practice materials relate to English phonetics rather than to general phonetics.   In the IPA strand, we prepare participants for the IPA Certificate of Proficiency in English Phonetics, which includes general phonetic ear-training and theory alongside English-related material. This strand presupposes a sound knowledge of phonetic theory (as set out in books such as Speech Sounds ¡ª see recommended reading page ), including the detailed description of articulatory movements in short stretches of connected speech. The course ends with a chance to take the exam. It is essentially a two-week intensive revision course with a strong emphasis on the practical skills required (ear-training, production practice and transcription); basic knowledge will be assumed, and teaching will focus on consolidating key points and issues.

Call for Papers: 6th EST CONGRESS -- LEUVEN 2010
"Tracks and Treks in TS"

In the 1960s, it seemed plausible that academic research into
translation would take a linguistic track. Close to half a century
later, it is clear that the discipline of Translation Studies has
followed a diversity of tracks, interacting with neighbouring
disciplines and exploring a range of paradigms and methodologies. At the
individual level, many scholars have been taking long treks from the
practice and/or teaching of Translation towards the acquisition of
theoretical and methodological tools with a view to gaining fresh
insights and widening horizons on translation and interpreting.
The 6th EST Congress will be a good opportunity to reflect upon such
tracks and treks in TS. What interesting evolutionary patterns can be
identified in our young discipline, including TS `turns', concepts,
theories and research methods? Can these patterns be identified in the
interests and work of Translation scholars? How has the TS community
grown in terms of demographics, branches and sub-branches? How do they
communicate and interact? What progress has been achieved in the
investigation of various aspects of Translation, including Translation
cognition, Translator training, Translation quality, Translation in its
cultural environment and Translation in its social environment? And what
new insights are provided by historical, sociological and scientometric
reviews? Which are the new tracks that will lead to successful treks in TS?

Programme: The congress programme is scheduled to start in the morning
of 16 September and end by lunch time on 18 September. It will include
plenary sessions, panels, parallel sessions and posters.

CALL FOR PAPERS EXTENDED TO MAY 18th!

 Dear Colleague,    The TM-Europe 2010 International Translation Management Conference will take place on 30 September and 1 October, 2010, in Kraków, Poland.  The pre-conference workshops are scheduled for 29 September 2010 and the Translation Technology Showcase is scheduled for the afternoon parallel session on 30 September.  Due to a number of requests, the deadline for submitting proposals for presentations, panels and workshops for TM-Europe 2010 has been extended until May 18, 2010.   This conference builds on the success of the previous TM-Europe conferences. The TM-Europe conferences bring together and address the needs of translation and localisation service providers, their customers, as well as translation vendors, technology providers and academics traditionally focusing on management issues for the translation and localisation industry. The theme of TM-Europe 2008 was customers, vendors and process management from the global and the local perspective. The theme of TM-Europe 2009 was quality and terminology management. In 2010 the emphasis is on project management, technology and tools, business models and process optimisation.   The final “Warsaw Pact” debate of TM-Europe 2010, which is webcast, will feature a panel composed of technology providers and their customers discussing the pros and cons of their mutual relationship. The focus will be on innovations, benchmarks, value of the existing business propositions, how can tool providers deliver greater value to their customers, as well as functionalities wish lists, standards, and project management and quality assurance requirements, and all other aspects of the tool provider and customer relationship. The Training and Research Group on Public Service Translation and Interpreting (FITISPos) at the University of
Alcalá (UAH) (Madrid, Spain) are pleased to announce the 4th International Conference on Public Service
Translation and Interpreting (8th International Meeting on Translation) to be hosted at the UAH, on the

Being the main theme of the Conference: Future in the Present: Public Service Interpreting and
Translation in the Wild Wired World (PSIT in WWW) we encourage all those who are interested in it to
send proposals on the following topics:

This conference is intended to offer PSI&T researchers, practitioners, trainers, academics, public service
authorities and people who are generally interested in intercultural communication and in translation and
interpreting, a forum for dialogue in this new society which is being shaped at a global level, as well as an
opportunity to exchange opinions and comment projects and experiences like the previous ones, held in 2002,
2005 and 2008.

30th, 2010 by e-mail (with the abstract included in the main body of the message and attached to the e-mail)

The decision of the Scientific Committee will be sent by December 10th, 2010, together with information on
